Our location for this Spain yoga hiking break, is an organic farm set high in the mountains of southern Spain.
A perfect location for our six night break in early autumn, when the weather will typically be sunny, warm and dry and the olive, almond and fruit trees will be at their best.
The accommodation is very simple and typically Spanish. It is set on a working organic farm, complete with pool and overlooking the mountains.
The farm grows all its own vegetables and fruit and so you can be sure that the meals will be fresh and all organically grown. However, it is in a remote area of Spain and one group meal will be provided at each meal time, so unfortunately we cannot guarantee to cater for those with special dietary needs other than vegetarians.
The area is famed for its typical white villages and has a wonderfully traditional Spanish feel to it which is a world away from the resorts of the Costas.
The accommodation for this Spain yoga hiking break is in a mixture of rooms : single rooms. twin share rooms and also a room for 4 people.
There is also a purpose built yoga shala with some of the best views of the surrounding mountains.
All meals are included and will be prepared for us by a local cook using mostly fresh ingredients grown on the farm and locally, based on traditional Spanish recipes.
There are also some great outside spaces and a pool to relax in after our yoga and hiking.
Spain Yoga Hiking Break Walks
As you would expect on this Spain Yoga Hiking break, there are some great local walks with high up mountain views, plus walks which take us along steep sided gorges and beside cool mountain streams. We will also walk to some of the typical old mountain villages nearby.
As we are in the mountains however, the walks do have some steep and rocky sections and can be quite strenuous if you are not used to this type of walking. Therefore, to fully enjoy this break you should be a fit and confident hillwalker.
The farm is also home to a peacock breeding sanctuary, as well as to goats, horses, cats and dogs and is a truly magical place which offers a unique opportunity to experience life on a Spanish farm.

“I had a wonderful time! lovely company and fabulous location – thanks Kevin and Yen.” – Simone
There are many great local hikes in the area to some of the beautiful nearby villages, up towards the higher Sierra Mountains with spectacular views and we can follow mountain streams through deep valley gorges.
On some hikes we will get transport to the start or from the finish back to the Cortijo.
Please note also, that some of the walks will include sections on quite steep mountain terrain and will at times be quite strenuous and therefore, to fully enjoy this break you should be a fit and confident hillwalker.
All hikes will be led by Kevin who is a fully qualified International Mountain Leader and member of the British Association of International Mountain Leaders (BAIML).
Below is an example hiking schedule, which we may modify depending on weather conditions.
Day 1 hike: Local white villages hike (12km, 500m ascent)
The Alpujarra region of Southern Spain, where we are based is famous for its pretty and unspoilt white villages, or Pueblos Blancos. During the week we will explore many of these villages, but on the first day we will visit two which are nearby on our hike.
We start our hike though along a short section of quiet lane, before descending steeply to the river below.
We cross a small packhorse bridge and follow a rocky path eventually through trees to our first village.
We take a short break here to explore and to fill up with water at the fountain, then head off towards our second village. We make our way across another ancient bridge before heading steeply uphill to rejoin the road for the final short hike back to the Cortijo.
We will have lunch at the Cortijo where we are staying outside on the terrace if the weather is good, or inside in the dining room if it is cool.
Day 2 hike: River valley and gorge hike (18km, 600m ascent)
Today we take a packed lunch as we will be out for a bit longer and so not be back in time for lunch at the Cortijo.
Our hike today takes us along the quiet road in the opposite direction to the village of Castaras. We then take a turn left and hike up through a wooded valley towards the village of Juviles where we will usually stop for a coffee break.
From Juviles we descend through a steep sided gorge with spectacular views and will stop for our picnic lunch.
We continue a steep descent into the next village and then follow another quiet road back to the village of Castaras where we usually stop for refreshments!
Day 3: Steep sided valley hike to fire lookout (14.5km, 700m ascent)
Because of the dry weather the Alpujarra region of Andalucia is quite prone to fires. There is a therefore a permanently manned lookout which has spectacular views of the surrounding hills, villages and mountains, which forms the main goal of todays hike.
Our day 3 hike will initially take us back down a steep sided mountain path to the village of Busquitas.
We then head across country following the course of one of the rivers, with steep cliffs to one side.
We then start a steady climb up to the fire lookout with its spectacular views over the surrounding mountains.
Our return is a simple downhill hike along a quiet road to the Cortijo for lunch.
Day 4 and Day 5 hiking options
We have lots more spectacular hikes to choose from, but we are likely to offer a longer and a shorter hike on these days. There is another pretty village which we can hike to down a steep sided valley from the Cortijo where we are staying. We can then hike back up through pomegranate and almond trees towards Castaras and return.
On our last days hike we will get some transport up to Trevelez, which is the highest village in Spain. We follow one of the GR routes on our hike back to the Cortijo, through woods, orchards and villages.
During this Sierra Nevada yoga hiking break, there will be 11 classes in total. The classes will be varied and so will be suitable for beginners as well as for those who have practised before. Sessions will take place each day before breakfast and after we return from our walks, except for one morning when there will be no class.
The general focus of the morning sessions will be to energise and warm up the body for our walk, and in the afternoon, will be to stretch out those tired muscles and relax the body. There will be an emphasis on the breath and movement, and our priority is for the yoga to be enjoyable and safe for all.
Yoga classes will be held indoors in the purpose built yoga shala overlooking the mountains. Morning classes will last for approximately 1 hr 15 mins and evening classes up to 1 hr 30 mins.
All yoga classes will be led by Yen who is a fully qualified and experienced yoga teacher registered with Yoga Alliance, a yoga sports coach and personal trainer.
If you have any queries regarding the yoga sessions, please contact us.

Getting there and back
There are lots of low cost airlines and flight options to and from the UK to Malaga which is the nearest airport. The flight time is 3 hours. You can also mix and match airlines and airports to get the best time and price to suit you. Skyscanner is a good site to look at for all options.
You may also want to extend for a few days to take in the Alhambra or spend a day or so at the coast.
Optional transfer to and from Malaga airport at suggested times
To be paid locally in Euros and price is Euro 60 per person for the return
We will arrange one group pickup from Malaga Airport to the accommodation at 15:00 on arrival day, Sunday 13th October, to meet with flights from the UK. Please ensure your flight is due to land at the latest by 14.00 to allow time to pass through immigration and to collect any checked in luggage. The transfer time is approximately 2.5 hours. You are of course free to arrive at any time and arrange your own transport to the Cortijo – renting a car would be the easiest option.
Note about flight delay: If your flight is delayed and you miss the scheduled pick up time, we can hold the transfer for up to one hour. However, if your flight is delayed for longer than this and therefore you will still not make the delayed pickup, you will need to arrange your own transport. Please ensure your flight lands with time to collect luggage and go through immigration.
On Saturday 19th October, departure day, you should book a flight departing from 5pm onwards and we will arrange one group transfer to depart the farm at midday. We will only be providing one group transfer, so if your flight time is later in the evening, then you will have some extra time at Malaga airport or to visit Malaga Old Town (a short train ride).
Car hire is also an option to give more flexibility while you are there.
