This Scafell Pike hiking plus yoga weekend is slightly different from our other YogaHikes trips as we are including only 2 yoga classes, instead of our normal four or five yoga classes. This is because the hike itself takes longer and is harder than our usual hikes on a YogaHikes break and is therefore the main focus of the weekend.
The weekend itself is a fully guided and all inclusive 2 day hiking weekend to climb Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain with two optional yoga classes. The yoga classes will be scheduled after the main Scafell Pike hike on Saturday afternoon and then on Sunday morning before breakfast.
We are staying in the grounds of Brathay Hall close to Ambleside, with extensive grounds and great views of the hills and lake. Our accommodation is on a sole use basis in the grounds and is in small bunk rooms. We have full use of the bar and dining room at the Hall itself.
On Saturday of our hiking plus yoga weekend we will hike to the summit of Scafell Pike from the Old Dungeon Ghyll in Great Langdale. This is one of the most scenic routes to the summit and we should get spectacular views across the whole of the Lake District if it is a clear day. The route is about 14 miles in length and the total ascent is around 1400m so it is a tough hike and you need to be fit to accomplish it.
On Sunday of the hiking plus yoga break will take a more leisurely and scenic hike around Loughrigg Fell and Grasmere to stretch out our legs and enjoy more of the stunning scenery.
Scafell Pike is iconic, not only because it is the highest in England, but also because of the history, its position and because of the astonishing views on the way up and from the summit.
The route that we use is not the shortest, but we believe it is the most scenic and much less busy than the common route up from Wasdale Head. Our route takes us from the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, up Mickleden and Rossett Ghyl to Esk Hause.
There are wonderful views down Langdale and across as far as Derwentwater in the North. From here we continue up towards Great End and then over boulders towards the summit. The total distance is around 14 miles (there and back) and the total height gain is around 1400m, so it is a tough and challenging day out.
On Saturday we will hike to the summit of Scafell Pike. The route starts the Old Dungeon Ghyll hotel and is a challenging but extremely rewarding way to climb England’s highest summit.
We start easily with a flat walk along Mickleden, but soon climb steeply through some of the most dramatic scenery in the Lakes, as we head towards the summit of Scafell Pike.
On our return route we can take in the additional summits of Esk Pike and Bowfell, before returning down The Band, for some well earned refreshment at the Old Dungeon Ghyll pub, often voted England’s favourite walkers pub. We then head back to Brathay for dinner and rest.
Note about Fitness/Experience
This is a big day out, but one which will remain in the memory for many years to come. The total distance is about 14 miles with an ascent of 1400m and as you would expect is very rocky and uneven walking at times. It should be achievable for anyone who is reasonably determined and hill fit, but should not be underestimated.
On Sunday we will take a leisurely hike over Loughrigg Fell to Grasmere and back. It is very scenic and will give us an opportunity to stretch our legs, without being too hard after yesterday’s long day out.
We are able to offer two optional yoga/stretch classes during this weekend.
We are able to offer two optional yoga/stretch classes during in this weekend.
We will use the open space upstairs in Lingmoor and all yoga equipment will be provided but please feel free to bring your own mat if you have one.
The classes will be after our hike to Scafell Pike when we return Saturday afternoon and also before breakfast on Sunday morning.
This is an ideal way to stretch out sore legs, backs and restore your posture after hiking. Also in the morning, to gently wake up and bring movement back to our limbs.
If you have never tried yoga before this is a perfect way to try in a friendly environment.
The yoga sessions will be taught by Yen who is a fully qualified and experienced yoga teacher.
Our accommodation is in the Lingmoor Lodge in the grounds of Brathay Hall and we also have 4 twin rooms available in the house itself. Brathay Hall is an extensive estate used by outdoor groups and for conferences and we have use of the bar and lounge (picture below) for relaxing and we also eat in the main dining room at the Hall.
The impressive Brathay Hall is set in 360 acres of mature woodland and rolling pasture at the head of Windermere, it is a stunning location with spectacular views of the Lake and surrounding hills. It is also set up to support active and outdoor groups like ourselves.
Brathay Hall has a wide selection of accommodation and for this weekend, we have the Lingmoor Lodge on a sole use basis, plus four twin rooms in the main hall. There are bunkrooms sleeping no more than 4 each and we allocate all rooms male or female. All rooms have shared bathrooms and showers.
Lingmoor Lodge is a good quality bunkhouse set in amazing grounds and in a great location. All rooms sleep 4 and there is a separate suite of bathrooms and toilets.
The twin rooms in the main hall are ensuite.
Lingmoor Lodge also has an extremely large lounge with kitchen on the upper floor which we can use to relax and will also act as our yoga room.
We use the dining room for our meals with great views out to the hills and down to the lake..
