Easter is a wonderful time to visit the Lake District.  The temperature is usually ideal for walking, the spring daffodils are out and its not too busy.  Lanehead is in a fantastic quiet location, but within an easy walk of Coniston and the nearest cosy lake district pub.  Lanehead itself is immaculate, in a wonderful old building, set in lovely grounds and we have it for our exclusive use for this weekend.

The yoga room has great views of Lake Coniston, gardens and hills and is conveniently located on the ground floor of the main building.
We will be offering a choice of beginner or intermediate classes for each session, so we can tailor the classes more closely to ability.  The weekend is therefore ideal for those just starting out on their yoga journey as well as for those wanting to stretch themselves a little bit more and delve deeper into their practice.

The walks in the area are also wonderful and we will be offering a choice of walks each day. You will be able to choose either a lower level and shorter walk or a higher level and more demanding hike.  There is a such a great choice of spectacular summit walks and scenic walks available and we will choose equally enjoyable walks for each day.  You can mix your choice of walks.

This Easter break will include 6 yoga classes, 3 guided hikes, 4 nights accommodation, all meals from a light supper Thursday evening to Monday breakfast (4 breakfasts, 3 packed lunches, 3 dinners and 1 light supper).

Easter Yoga Hikes – Hiking

We will be offering a choice of hikes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  There will be two hike leaders, so each day we will offer a choice of a lower level shorter hike, or a higher level hike to summits such as Coniston Old Man or Wetherlam.

Because of its location Coniston is perfect for our Easter yoga hikes weekend and offers great options for both easy and challenging walks.  On Friday and Saturday we are likely to explore the village and the lakeshore walks around the Lake and the Coniston Old Man.  Sunday gives us the opportunity to visit Tarn Hows and some of the Fells, for those that feel up to a more energetic walk.

Easter Yoga Hikes – Yoga

At Lanehead we have our own dedicated room which we will use for our yoga classes.  Please note that on this break we are offering yoga classes tailored to ability : beginner or intermediate level.  On Friday and Monday, we begin the day with yoga classes for both beginners and intermediate yoga groups before breakfast, then head out for our walk.  When we return from our walk later in the afternoon, we enjoy tea with lots of Yen’s delicious homemade cake.   On each evening when we return, again there will be a yoga class for both beginners and intermediate groups.

Note that because we are tailoring the classes to ability on Saturday morning there will be a beginners class only before breakfast and  on Sunday there will be an intermediate class only in the morning, then two classes again in the afternoon.  On Monday morning were will be two classes before breakfast.  This means you get a bit of a break or lie in on one morning at least.

Easter Yoga Hikes – Meals

Dinner on Friday, Saturday and Sunday is a homemade dinner prepared by Kevin and Yen in the spacious annex room.

A light supper is also available on Thursday evening on arrivals for those who would like it, otherwise there are plenty of pubs enroute to Coniston that you might like to try out.

Easter Yoga Hikes - Dining Room

Breakfast will also be served in the annex and will be a self serve breakfast each day with a variety of cereals, fruit, yogurt, toast etc.

For lunch we will put out a selection of rolls and fillings with salad, fruit  and snacks for you to make your own pack lunch.

Please note that for this event, there will be a choice of hike each day, and you will be asked to choose for each day.

We will have two walks leaders so there will be a choice of walks each day which you are free to choose depending on your experience and energy levels at the time.

The planned routes with estimated distances and times are below, however, these may be adjusted depending on the weather conditions at the time.

Moderate Walks

Friday (11km, 450m of ascent)

On our first day we will take a hike up along some beautiful woodland trails to the picturesque spot of Tarn Hows.  We can explore around the lake where there are some lovely viewpoints of the surrounding hills and the Tarn itself.  Our return will take alongside a river and down through more woodland with some stunning waterfalls.  We then head into the village of Coniston, where we take a break and explore, before we head back to Lanehead.

Saturday (11km, 350m of ascent)

We will hike around the western shore of the lake where we will get stunning views across the water and of the surrounding Coniston hills.  There is then a short uphill section to reach Kelly Hall Tarn which is a fabulous spot for photos and to explore.  We then head back over to Coniston Water for a short Ferry ride (not included in the price) across to Brantwood the famous home of Ruskin.  Then its a short walk back to Lanehead.

Sunday (11km, 450m of ascent)

Our final hike of the weekend will take us exploring the beautiful forest of Grizedale.  It has some gorgeous forest trails and views over Coniston Water and towards Windermere.  Also, if we have time we will aim to visit the famous and picturesque village of Hawkshead, with its lovely pubs and tea shops.

Note: These walks are moderate walks by Lake District Standards of about 11km (7.5 miles) each day. However, as it is the Lake District, there may still be steep and rocky sections and possibly wet and boggy sections. Therefore a good level of fitness is required and boots are strongly advised.

Harder Summit Hikes

As we are surrounded by so many stunning and classic Lake District mountains, it would be a shame not to hike up them.  So we are also offering the option of heading up some of these hills each day.  Depending on the weather we may change the order or change the itinerary slightly.

Friday (15km and 1000m of ascent)

Hike to the summit of the Old Man of Coniston.  This is such a famous mountain and gives such stunning views its a fantastic day out.  Our return takes us down the footpath beside Goat Water and the Walna scar track, through Coniston and then back to Lanehead.

Saturday (13.5km and 750m of ascent)

We will have a less demanding day today as we hike up to the lovely spot of Tarn Hows and then head over to some less popular mid level summits.  This allows us to explore some less busy but stunning viewpoints of Black Crag and Holme Fell and visit the spectacular Quarry at Hodge Close.

Sunday (15km, 990m of ascent)

We return to the high fells today with our stunning hike to the summit of Wetherlam.  Our route take us past Levers Water, then its a steady climb to the summit itself.  Our return is along a broad grassy summit ridge which gives us stunning views over Coniston Water as we descend back into the village of Coniston, where we may feel the urgent need to stop for refreshment.

Please note: All of our weekends are aimed at people who have a good level of hiking and general fitness.

Yoga

We have a dedicated room for our yoga practice with views out over the gardens to the Lake and mountains.

You will be able to attend 6 classes during this break.

We are offering two classes tailored to ability :  one gentler class aimed at beginner/improvers level and one more experienced aimed at a more intermediate level.

You will be asked to indicate your class choice upon booking (please add to the notes section)

We offer a yoga class for each group on Friday and Monday morning only, and again a yoga class for each group each evening after hiking.

On Saturday morning there will only be 1 yoga class for the beginners/improver class (the intermediate group can have a lie in!)

On Sunday morning there will only 1 yoga class for the intermediate group (the beginners/improvers group can have a lie in!).  The reason for this is that we have found that it is good to have a morning off as two classes and a strenuous hike each day can be a bit too much of a good thing!

Yoga sessions will generally take place before breakfast and after we return from our walk. The general focus of the morning sessions will be to energise and warm up the body for our walk, and in the afternoon, will be to stretch out those tired muscles and relax the body and calm the mind. Yoga and hiking are a good combination, and everyone leaves feeling rejuvenated and re-energised.

If you want more detailed information, you might find this blog post useful about the yoga classes on our breaks.

Easter yoga classes yoga classes on our yoga hikes weekends

A limited number of mats will be provided for your use but feel free to bring your own mat if you prefer.

Note: We have found that we do have a wide range of yoga experience within our groups which is why we have classes more tailored to ability on this weekend.  Those who are experienced (intermediate level – familiar with sun salutations and practice regularly) and a class for those who are beginners or improvers (new or returners to yoga) or those who prefer a softer/gentler practice.  The gentler class aimed at beginners/improvers is also suitable for those who may have an injury or a specific area of concern.

Please be realistic as to your ability so we can make the classes more enjoyable for all.  The yoga room holds up to 14 people comfortably, so we will have to split the group more or less equally between classes.  You will be asked to choose your level of yoga class ; beginner or intermediate at the time of booking in the notes section.

Any queries regarding the yoga sessions, please contact us.

Monday train times have changed with a train departing Oxenholme now at 1313, so we will change the transfer time leaving Lanehead to 12noon, which means there is more time to relax, perhaps walk into the village. Check out time of the rooms is 10am, and 11am for the main house, but we are free to use the gardens and annexe until the transfer comes.

We can offer one timed group transfer at a cost of £15.  The pickup will be from Windermere and the return drop off to Oxenholme.

Getting There

Suggested trains from Euston Station to Windermere, the nearest train station which is 10 miles away.  This same train can also be picked up in the Midlands and Manchester on its way north.

Getting Back

Mon 22/04

(departures from the hostel at 11am)

We’ve been made aware of some bus replacement services between Windermere and Oxenholme over Easter weekend, so will arrange the transfer back to Oxenholme.  The bus replacement service is lengthy and would get you to Oxenholme with still a long wait for trains.

Please note this transfer will enable you to catch the 1223 train to London (arrives 1523 into London Euston), or the 1243 train to Manchester  (arrives 1415 into Manchester) or the 1238 Northbound train to Glasgow and other destinations.

Please note that recommended train times may change closer to the time.

Train tickets are best bought in advance online and cheap tickets are usually issued 12 weeks before travel at http://www.thetrainline.com/buytickets/default.aspx
