Our October 2019 Rydal Hall Yoga Hiking Weekend is based at the very grand and historic Rydal Hall.

We are just a few minutes walk from Rydal Water, Rydal Mount (Wordsworth’s home) and the picturesque church where William Wordsworth was church warden.

Rydal Hall is a stunning location and steeped in Lake District history, so join us for a very special weekend of yoga and hiking.

For this event we are able to offer yoga classes more tailored to ability (improver/gentler classes and also intermediate classes), and also a choice of a moderate hike and a more strenuous hike.

Rydal Yoga Hiking weekend

The Rydal yoga hiking weekend will begin with arrivals from 3pm on Friday and our first class will be at 5:30pm with dinner at 7:00pm.

Rydal Hall has plenty of history being owned by the Le Fleming family which can be traced back to 1126. It was built in the 16th century and has been enlarged, altered and refaced to what it is now currently, a grade II listed building along with the terraces, bridges, summerhouses and various outbuildings.  The magnificent formal gardens are worthy of a visit, and offer a unique example of Edwardian gardening with beautiful lawns and flowers set against the fine architecture of the Hall itself.  The Hall is now used as retreat and conference centre and is owned by the Diocese of Carlisle.  The grounds of the hall are available for us explore freely for the whole weekend and provide tranquil and scenic gardens for a quiet moment or two.

Rydal Beck and its natural waterfalls flows through the grounds which include The Grot, a summerhouse built to view the waterfalls.  The Grot is described in Wordsworth poem, An Evening Walk.

Trip Includes:
Five yoga classes according to ability, choice of  two guided walks each day, 3 course dinner on Friday & Saturday, lunches, breakfast and 2 nights accommodation in single or twin rooms.  We will also be including traybakes, tea and coffee each afternoon after our walk.

You will be asked to choose your hikes upon arrival.

Important note: The route is dependent on weather conditions and if the weather is bad, or we believe conditions are dangerous, then we will choose alternative routes.  However, we will complete the walk whatever the conditions. 

NB If you have been with us before where there has only been a single group hike, this is our moderate yoga hike.  The strenuous options cover more distance, height gain and descent, over some rougher ground, and at a slightly faster pace.

ALL HIKES WILL BE LED BY QUALIFIED MOUNTAIN LEADERS

Moderate Hikes
We have a great variety of lovely walks we can take directly from our accommodation including the walk alongside Rydal Water to Grasmere and Loughrigg Terrace which we will aim to do on Saturday.

On Sunday we can walk round to the quiet and picturesque Loughrigg Tarn and then over Loughrigg fell on our way back.

The walks may vary depending on the weather conditions at the time but we have lots of options to choose from.

Walks are graded moderate, but please note that the Lake District is not flat, so there will be some steep and maybe rocky sections so a reasonable level of fitness is needed.

Our approximate walking time will be 5-6 hrs and distance 9-10 miles for the Saturday, and slightly less on the Sunday.

Strenuous Hikes

These will be faster paced than the moderate hikes, covering more distance and height gain, and will most likely go up into the higher fells taking in some lower level summits.

Please note for the strenuous walks, a good level of hill fitness and hillwalking experience is required as there will be longer sections of ascent and descent, on rough terrain and a faster pace than the moderate hikes.

We have found that we do have a wide range of ability during our weekends from beginners to teachers.

So for this weekend, at each yoga session slot there will be a improver/gentler class for those who are new or returning to yoga, (also suitable for those who may have an injury or a specific concern) and also an intermediate class for those who practice regularly or those with a longer standing practice.

We will have two dedicated yoga rooms on the ground floor : The Drawing Room and The Old Kitchen.

We offer a yoga class on Friday evening before dinner and then two yoga classes each day.  Yen and another local teacher will take all the yoga classes and will split the classes so irrespective of your level, you will have two teachers over the weekend.

There will be five yoga sessions during the weekend, and these take place on Friday before dinner, Saturday and Sunday before breakfast and after we return from our walks.

The general focus of the morning sessions will be to energise and warm up the body for our walk, and in the afternoon, will be to stretch out those tired muscles and relax the body.  There will be an emphasis on the breath and movement, and our priority is for the yoga to be enjoyable and safe for all.

A limited number of mats will be provided for your use but feel free to bring your own mat if you prefer.

All rooms for this weekend are either single en-suite or twin en-suite (ideal for couples or friends who are happy to share), and a small number of singles with private bathrooms for sole use, or to share between 2 rooms.   All rooms have tea and coffee making facilities and towels.

If you are coming on your own and prefer a twin share, or those are the only rooms still available, don’t worry we will match you up with a room mate of the same sex.

Rydal Hall resides in 34 acres of stunning parkland in the heart of the English Lake District. The main house is a Grade II listed historic house with some parts dating back to the 1600s.

All rooms have been upgraded to provide comfortable en-suite or private facilities. All food is freshly prepared in the kitchen using local and seasonal produce wherever possible and dinner is three courses and is served in the grand dining room.

While staying at Rydal Hall we can explore the beautiful Lake District surroundings and simply enjoy the peace and quiet at the hall and its beautiful gardens.

Getting There

Suggested trains from Euston Station.

(please note the pickup will be from Windermere Station, and the return will be to Oxenholme Station)

Getting Back

Sun 06/10 – Depart 17:14, Arrive 20:13

You will be dropped off at Oxenholme Station*

We can drop you off after the last yoga class.

*Northern Rail have changed the train times on the local Lakes line between Windermere and Oxenholme and the timings mean a return transfer to Oxenholme means we can still stick to our schedule and have a reasonable hike on Sunday.

Please note that recommended train times may change closer to the time.

Train tickets are best bought in advance online and cheap tickets are usually issued 12 weeks before travel at Trainline tickets online
